Levi Strauss, was the Jewish founder of Levi Strauss & Co, one of the largest clothing manufacturers in the world and the first company in history to produce jeans.
In 1872, Jacob Davis, a tailor who regularly bought clothes from Levi, explained to him the problem that miners had with the pockets of the trousers which lost their stitching as a result of the rough conditions in the mines. The two of them came up with a way of reinforcing the corners of the pockets and they decided together to apply for a patent for the invention.
On 20 May 1873 the patent was granted and the brand registered, thus marking the official birth of the first Levi’s and the beginnings of the most manufactured piece of clothing of all time: what we now call jeans.
